The Fades - Social Misfits - Dirrty Records - 2006
  -- Saturday, May 27, 2006

The Fades hail from south west London and have just released this album on a Beverly Hills label. How they ever got together, I have no idea. This band has nothing Rodeo Drive about them. They claim to be "punk soul rockers." Sure, I could see that maybe. I don't really see the punk part. Soul rockers, sure. They mesh well with a lot of those DIY indie THE bands that have been popping up lately: The Action, The New Pornographers, The Decemberists, ... I think you can see where I'm going with that. The Fades are definitely funkier than those bands. Plus they have a song about motorbikes. Catchy.

Set To Explode - Grave Mistake Records - 2005

Dude, fuck you if you don't know and love Set To Explode.

They are playing a few more shows in Europe (until Monday, I think). So you dudes in Europe, you better enjoy them while they are there. We Americans will patiently await their return.

Names For Graves - Worst Kid Ever EP / Version 2.1 EP - Specimen 32 Records / Refuse Records - 2005

I slept on reviewing this EP a little, but not since winter 2004/2005. One day out of the blue, I received a package with two EPs, both by Names For Graves. The Worst Kid Ever EP and Version 2.1. I think Nate felt I needed to have these EPs and just shipped them out. Even if they did arrive in early 2006. Hell, he even sent colored vinyl, white and clear red.

All good, mostly because this cleveland hardcore band rips. Each song has more of a Youngblood vibe than Clevo vibe. I guess I'm just used to hearing Integrity or Confront. That's what Cleveland is to me. This band is great regardless of that lack of comparison. Why they weren't on Youngblood is beyond me. Instead, their EPs were released by a London, Ontario label, and a label from Poland. Odd.

You can check out Names For Graves on myspace. They have 3 songs up, and a mention of a "last show" on June 17. God, why is this happening to me today? You should go to this show. LOJ is playing too.

Turn The Screw EP - Not Just Words - 2005

Uh-oh. I just found this stack of EPs under another stack of stuff. Oh man, I've been sitting on these for way too long. Jesus, I'd like to apologize to the dudes over at Not Just Words Records. Wow, I'm an asshole.

Now that I'm past that, let's get into Turn The Screw. This EP basically rips from song to song. The stand out track for me is "Sick." Despite being very un-pos, it still rips. I can see the circle pits and stage dives now.

Eff, I slept for so long on this EP that the band has already broken up. And has been broken up for 3 months. Jeez, I suck. Regardless, go over to Not Just Words records and pick up their full catalog. You can get into these.

Down To Nothing / On Thin Ice - Grave Mistake Records - 2006

I had the great misforutne of missing Down To Nothing the other night when they played Worcester. Pat Flynn of Have Heart told us the show was starting at 6pm. He was wrong. The show started at 5pm. We showed up right as DTN was moving their gear off stage. Man, Pat was really apologetic after that. Great dude. I also had a chance to talk to the DTN dudes after the show. Great crew of dudes.

This band is doing big things. I think the outstanding track on this split is "Smash It."
For the weak, not for the strong. Straight edge because we don't want to belong. I'm not going to put myself on the same level as all the fucking bullshit I don't stand for. Smash It!

I love straight edge pride tracks. They always go over well in my book. And any song with a catchy chorus like "Smash it!" is gold in my book. Great posi vibe throughout all the songs. I love PMA. More bands need a positive outlook.

On Thin Ice follows up on the b-side. They are currently defunct, but out of their ashes rose Age Of Kali. Take all the positive energy DTN brought, and throw it out the window. This band talks up "dead mans hand in a losers game," "if suicide weren't so cliche, I'd spare us all another day..." Yeah, that's something I can't chill with. Hopefully the new band will bring a more posi vibe.

Left Hand Path - The Wreckage - Organized Crime Records - 2006

Is it me, or does this band think they are Motorhead? I have nothing against Motorhead, but I do think one is enough. I blame the b-side of the EP for getting Motorhead stuck in my head. That guys handle bar moustache/beard is ferocious. They probably sound nothing like Motorhead, but since I have "Ace of Spades" playing in my brain, I'm stuck (maybe somebody will call me a noob again). Upon focusing, I really see a similarity to early Integrity and Iron Age. Not bad, not bad at all. Please note, this band has no rockin facial hair.

You can check out Left Hand Path on myspace. Listen to a few tracks, get down.

Black SS / Raining Bricks - Organized Crime Records - 2006

Ok, this split EP comes from Syracuse. When I think Syracuse, I think vegan justice and early hellfests. Hanging out in a VFW for 3 days, or moving from Hungry Charlies to a different location when the crowd got too big. It usually ended with hanging out in Oneida and hitting up Turning Stone. Regardless, Black SS doesn't make me think of Path or poker. They actually have a strong Slapshot influence. It's like Slapshot 2006 but after a youthful trip through time. Fast and aggressive. Toss in a Ramones cover, and I'm sold.

The Raining Brick side isn't quite as good to me. Maybe it's the first song that brings me down, "Brains On Vacation." It just doesn't mesh with me. "Mallocaust," now that song I can hang with.

Red vinyl and a cartoon of the X'ed, masked wrestler from the back cover of the DYS Wolfpack LP make me a happy guy.

Check out Organized Crime Records for more information on releases and merch for both bands.

Fight IT Out - Better Days - Playoff Records 004 - 2006

Once upon a time, or back in August 2005, I reviewed the Fight It Out demo. This is the vinyl release. This time around, the inserts are all there, and the layout seems pretty chill. I'm a big fan of the slick, semi-laminated insert. Real sharp. And red vinyl, that's a nice touch. My opinion hasn't really changed though. So you can read my review of it here.

Fade Away Jumper! - Capeside x Playoff Records - 2006

I opened this package and got psyched. The song titles called out to me, "I Threw The Cup At Ron Artest," "Larry Bird Can Dunk So Why Can't You?" ... I was fully expecting a Ten Yard Fight demo about basketball in 2006. This was going to be a great play at tongue in cheek.

To my surprise, it wasn't anything like that. The song titles are merely metaphors for the songs. But the songs fail to continue that witty play on words, minus a semi mention in "Full Court Press." The songs may fail at joking around, but they don't fail at sounding good. This EP is great. And it sounds nothing like Ten Yard Fight.

So go check these dudes out. You can listen to the demo online. All 4 of the tracks are also on this EP. Also, good work on the orange vinyl. Great color choice.

Cross Examination - The Hung Jury - Organized Crime Records #14 - 2006
  -- Monday, May 22, 2006

Holy crap. The artwork for this album is straight 80s metal. Think Deicide and Excel. Hell, the font is so metal, I want to start banging my head until my face melts.

You can see what I'm saying, right? Wow.

So much thrash on this album. No weird, cheese metal. I see circle pits, sleeveless leather jackets and chain wallets. I can see the Circle Jerk logo dude pitting during this album. So much partying, lots of beer being swilled and vomit. If the dudes from the A-Team (Thrashford, not B. A. Baracus) had a soundtrack to life, this would be it. The Suicidal Tendencies cover and the S.O.D. cover are just gravy.

Do yourself a favor, and go check out their web page. I guarantee you will not regret it.

You said the cover was so 80's metal. You mentioned Excel which made sense since they were a part of the whole thrash metal/hardcore crossover scene but Deicide? They are a cheesey Satanic Death Metal band. Plus when they were around inteh 80's they were known as Amon and were not called Deicide until the 90's. Know your shit first noob.

Red Sky Morning - Blood For Ink

This cd came with a one page press release. Normally, press releases bum me out. Here's why. If a band is big enough to mock up a press release, they probably don't fit in the niche of bands I can get into. However, if I receive a tape cassette with a poorly photocopied sleeve and a note scribbled on a sticky note, I know something good is coming.

Ok, I read the press release and I was immediately interested. I'll admit, I was interested in a "wrong way" (Oooh, a Sublime pun. Ouch). You see, the press release claims the band is a mix of rock, reggae and punk. You can see where the pun comes into play. When you mix those sounds, you either get something amazing like the Bad Brains or something awful like 311. Initially, I was hoping for Red Sky Morning to have the 311 sound. Yeah, I was feeling cynical.

Needless to say, I was wrong. The band didn't sound like 311 at all. In fact, they sounded like at least 4 different bar bands. Yeah. Each song appears to have it's own genre. Instead of blending the sounds, the band hits one genre per song.

"Ok, this song will be the college, reggae jam and this song will be the weird voice filter, rocker jam. Ooh, can this song be an ode to Screaming Trees? ..."

If they blended the sounds, I could hang. I could hang with a weird fusion of rock, reggae and punk. But the one off songs just bring me down. Not only that, but the whole album just comes off confusing and muddled. It just doesn't flow with all the jumping around. Pick a sound and stick to it, or fuse them. Quit jumping from one to another.

They have a website; peep Red Sky Morning.

^^ I have never seen the CBs stage look that empty before. Wow.

I don't think that you gave Red Sky Morning a fair review (if your review is even creditable). It sounds like you didn't like it before you even hit the play button. I have seen them live multiple times at a couple different places in NYC and they are a great band. Please see the attached website for an honest opinion.

Future Primitive - Expression Sessions

Future Primitive. When I hear that phrase, I think Bones Brigade. I think mid 80s thrashin in school yards or back yard pools. I don't really think of 2006 hardcore bands. Bypassing the name issue, this cd pretty much rips. It reminds me of the Massachusetts scene in the mid 90s. I swear I hear Dive covers. And was that Bound? (I could do without the "Use Your Voice Today" chant though.) Toss in a little 2k hardcore vocal styling and you have Future Primitive.

It doesn't hurt that the album was mixed and mastered by Vic Dicara. It also never hurt when your Inside Out cover features Vic Dicara on guitar. Jeez, I wonder how they hooked that up? Hmmm.

Now, if you are slow like me, you'll have already thought to go look at their myspace page. I used a common URL name, and found the other Future Primitive instead. What about those dudes? I want to hang.

^^ Not the real Future Primitive.

You can check the "real" Future Primitive here. Sweet. If you are in southern, sunny California, check these dudes out. According to their myspace page, they are playing a ton of shows in the near future.
