Generations - Demo 2006 -- Friday, April 07, 2006 I saw Preston the other night at a show, and he gave me this demo. I had heard a lot about the band via various message boards. The hype on this band is based on the fact that it was produced by Tom Capone. No dig on the band, but I think at this point, the producer is overshadowing the songs. And when you listen to the demo, you can really hear TC3s influence especially during the screaming guitar solos. ![]() For the most part, this demo is good. I wouldn't declare it as amazing due to one or two faults. First off, it sounds like the singer is really detached from most of the music. I know this will sound weird, but the mastering makes it sound like the singer "plays a hardcore singer on tv." You know, like those commercials with the "doctor" and at the bottom of the screen it says, "portrays a doctor on such and such a tv show?" Yeah, that's what it seems like. I could also use a little more pos. I miss super positive hardcore. The song We Stand is a great start on that road, though. Maybe that will all change. The lead singer has been called up for active duty (keep your head down, bro) and Preston is taking over on vocals. The live show has always appeared super active. I'm guessing Preston will continue this tradition but if we are lucky, he'll give it that push that sends it even further. I'm guessing Preston will also add his PMA to any new tracks. Dope. You can check out two songs on the Generations myspace page.
Within Walls - Demo 2005 -- Monday, April 03, 2006 I got this demo a while back. Straight from Europe, Dornbirn Hardcore. I was pretty amped to be getting a demo on tape. It's been a while. Not that I'm against CD-R demos (great for the car ride to work) but demo tapes imply that extra effort. It's like the mixtape. Kids these days barely have any idea what the etymology of the word is. Sad but true. Oddly enough, it was numbered 27/100. Who makes a limited demo tape? That just seems silly. Now, let's get into the tunes. For some reason, I was expecting some generic, positive youth crew (my favorite). Yeah, I was pretty far off. In reality, this band sounds like the European counterpart to Verse. In fact, this demo could be an unreleased Verse demo, or maybe some Verse b-sides. It was almost frightening how similar the two bands sound. And that isn't a negative comment. It's very positive. I just saw Verse rock a mason lodge this weekend. Kids were going ape, and sitting behind the merch table, I sold quite a few of the Outspoken/Current designs. Kids were psyched. ![]() And kids will be psyched on this demo. They won't be able to sing along to "scene unity" or "straight edge pride" like lyrics, but they'll still be into it. If this sounds like your thing, I'd suggest contacting Seb for more details. You can hit him up at his email address here. And if you want to hear what this band has to offer, check out their Myspace page. Just Surrender - If These Streets Could Talk - Broken English - 2005 -- Saturday, April 01, 2006 Please revoke my hardcore membership card now. "STAND ON TOP OF THE ROOF TOP WONDERING!!" This album is blowing my mind. It's pop punk/ radio hits at its best. Move over Taking Back Sunday and all other bands. Just Surrender is coming through. Holy crap. I'm not hardcore. I'm should go back to high school so I can pine over that "hot girl" and wear my nerdy glasses. Jesus, this album is good. ![]() This band is playing in Providence in 2 days. But then again, it's also the opening day for Sox. Jeez, what a rough choice. Check them out. This band is going to blow up. Get in on the ground floor. Beat those high school girls to the punch. The Fully Down - Don't Get Lost in A Movement - Fearless - 2005 This is a Pike band. He sent me the cd saying, "these dudes are going to blow up. Listen to those hits. You'll dig it." He was right. Now, keep in mind, this isn't hardcore. Unless you consider MTV2 bands that talk about girls and emotions with some smashing pop parts hardcore. Yeah, me neither. Regardless, this album has some great songs. Think along a Fall Out Boy tip but with more riffage. A little harder. This'll appeal to those girls who got out of Fall Out Boy after moving onto the 9th grade. Alternative Press said this band would appeal to people who put "Iron Maiden & Thrice songs back to back on your mix tapes." Now, I have no idea what AP is ever talking about. This appplies to their quote too. This band sounds like neither of those two bands. Hell, they don't even sound like the merger of the two bands. Freakin AP. ![]() You can look into this band on the Fearless Records site or on Myspace OR on the official band site. Sheesh. I'd suggest you look into it. And keep an eye out for them when they start touring. I could definitely see an All American Rejects/ The Fully Down tour. Hot. The Destroyed - Russian Roulette - 2006 Wow, this band has some history. They have been playing songs and releasing music since before I was born. One of these tracks was written in 1977. Yeah, that almost beats out my older brother. That makes these guys some old punk ass mother fuckers. ![]() 9 tracks. Very punk rock. Not really my thing. I can hang with the pogo-your-ass-off Sex Pistols or The Clash. Or even the Circle Jerks. But I need FAST tracks. Punk to me is about youth angst, which then leads to blistering fast tracks about hating school or hating your job at the local grocery store. This album is just too mellow and slow going. But it isn't rock n' roll either. It's distinctively punk rock. ![]() You can check out their site, listen to them for yourself. They have mp3s up. Check them out here. Procedure - Shift Pacific - Eyeset World - 2005 Whoa, from note number one, I'm getting ready for some Strife sounds. And from the Richard Dawkins quotes and other species related quotes, I'm getting ready for mid 90s Syracuse. Thankfully, my expectations are pretty well met. This album sounds like it should have been released by EVR back in '96. At this point, it's really an anachronism. It brings back memories of early Hellfests and that Strife video. But in this day and age, it's really, really out of place. I imagine this band sets up there merch with a vegan cookie and vegan lit section (fuck, I love being vegan and eating vegan cookies). Nothing wrong with that, but it just is so foreign now. ![]() Maybe that's what this band is going for. Maybe that's what hardcore is missing. A little activism in the scene. Some serious knowledge dropping. And the rocking instrumentally songs kick ass. Makes me think of those Bane tracks on It All Comes Down To This. And you know how I am biased. The other tracks go from mid 90s screams to mid 90s sing songy sounds. I bet Scott Pesek would love this band. You can check them out on Myspace. Enjoy. Good old Trenton NJ.
Knockdown - Discography - Youngblood 12 - 2006 You remember Knockdown. They were that band that started in 2001 as Full Contact. Full Contact was this straight edge, positive, youth crew band from DC. They pretty much ripped. Then there was some weirdness and they had to change their name. Oddly enough, they changed their name to Knockdown, which in the hardcore world, was a band that played in the mid 90s in Massachusetts. I could see how they could overlook the MA Knockdown, except that Tre went on to be big with Deathwish Inc and Dalbec went onto Bane. The liner notes don't mention that part. However, the liner notes do mention a tour with No Warning. What the liner notes AGAIN fail to mention is that it was a THREE band tour. Yeap, they toured with xThe Gamex. (If you look at the pics on the inside of the CD, you will see one Jim C [ hiding behind an Awake shirt ] singing along) I recall Jim and Seth telling me stories of Saturday morning campouts for Jordans with the Knockdown/No Warning crew. Or the story about Ben No Warning smashing a sleeping-in-a-driveway Posi John with a pillow. Onto the songs. You've heard this music before. You know it's good. It was remastered in 2005, so if you weren't happy with your Full Contact demo tape, here's your chance to hear it right. Dew it!
Iron Age - Constant Struggle - Youngblood 23 - 2006 I was talking to Pete Lynch about this the other day. He kept raving and raving about how good this album is and how eccentric the "influence list" was. He wasn't wrong. He was right. This album pulls a little from many bands. Take some Leeway, a little Biohazard, some Floorpunch, sprinkle in some mysticism and you have Iron Age. This album is fucking HARD. And not in that kickboxing or Hatebreed vein. Hard like Death Camps or All I Ask. This album will not be leaving my cd player for some time. Thank you Youngblood Records and Iron Age.
