The Terms - Smalltown Computer Crash - Maple Jam Records -- Saturday, February 18, 2006 Holy crap, am I listening to Danzig X Morphine? What is going on here? My mind is being blown. It's like Initium mixed with Cure For Pain without the saxophone. I'm telling you, my mind is being blown. Thankfully, the second song blows that image. It's none of the above. It's actually 5 dudes that hail from Baton Rouge, with frequent visits to New Orleans. In fact, I read somewhere that the majority of money made from this release are being donated to hurricaine relief. That's cool by me. Real generous of these dudes. Again, an uncore group. Don't think Youth Of Today. Think a happy Snow Patrol instead. Feel free to also think, "hey, didn't I hear these guys on One Tree Hill the other night?" I don't think you did, but it wouldn't surprise me if you do in the future. A pretty all right release. Chill. And it comes with a DVD. Lot's of footage. Not too shabby. Melissa says, "they sound like a refined bar band." Hmm. Interesting. You can check out their website for more details. Be warned, it kept killing my Firefox 1.5 browser. Real annoying. That's why there are no pics for this review. Edit: Thanks to Kelly from Mad Ink, the Terms PR person, I now have a pic.
Twofold Truth - Serious Demo 2005 TAKE CONTROL AND BE POSITIVE!! Initially, this band struck me as a youthful Ignite, but now I see they are more than that. Youthful exuberance abounds, but their sound extends beyong Ignite riffs and vocals. They are more core (the second song seems to rip off some intro which is not coming to me) and less politico. Damn long songs though. You can contact these dudes for a demo or more info. If you live in the Long Island area, I'd suggest checking these dudes out. Wake Up Call - One Eye Open - Think Fast! Records 018 - 2006 Spooky. The cover art is straight disturbing. The back cover (not pictured) may be worse. ![]() That's a real tiny one. That way you won't have any nightmares. If it was bigger, you might not read the rest of this review. No one wants that. However, you should note that the Wake Up Call logo was made by Mike of Make Or Break. Great band, great work. Seems like a great dude, too. Maybe it's the Think Fast! reference, but I definitely see an Outbreak influence (be prepared for the new Outbreak release. I hear it SHREDS). Fast hardcore from South Paris, Maine. For most of you, that might as well be Canada. But it is barely central Maine. Ah, Maine. ![]() Check out the bands website for downloads, more pics and updates. Word.

Dropgun - Devil Music - 2005 Sometimes, I seem to get releases out of left field. I'm not really certain how I got on this mailing list, but I'm on it. ![]() Dropgun isn't straight edge hardcore. They aren't thrash metal. They aren't youth crew inspired. Rather, they are punk rockers. I imagine them as all older dudes (35+) playing punk rock. Like looking at Social Distortion in 2006. Weekend warriors with 9-5 jobs, wives and kids. Judging from the pics I found on their myspace pages, I wasn't fairly on the ball with my guesses. ![]() They play songs that would fair well in large venues, but I can't picture these guys playing a VFW hall to 45 teenagers. For a DIY group, they already seem to have a big feel to them. It'll be interesting to see where they go from here. ![]() You can check out their band and their cowbell on the web or at their myspacepage. Expired Youth - Where We Stand - Think Fast! Records 017 - 2006 These kids got heart. No doubt. I think they hail from Chicago, but I can't be positive of that. You should probably try and see them live if you can. If you enjoy fast, hardcore with balls, look into them. ![]() This CD is their EP with the demo tacked onto the end. You can hear a real difference between the EP and the demo. It really sounds like they were growing into their style, becoming more comfortable with their sound. The song Looking Glass has a great little intro. I was going to make a Snapcase reference, but it's not relevant at all. This band is Snapcase free. Look into these guys. They are down with the straight edge. That's a bonus in my book. Check Think Fast! Records for more information. Word.

Engineer - Reproach - HEX 014 - 2006 Here we go. First, the band lists the following as a-list material: Coalesce, The Melvins, Botch and Knut. Now, I only know 3 out of 4 of these bands, and I can honestly say I don't like those 3 at all. Engineer fits the same category. I think it is coined as math metal. Real tricky shit, with exta super artsy layouts. Actually, I'm a big fan of the layout. It's a little over the top fancy-wise, but I dig it. ![]() Decibel Magazine gave them a stunning review. If you like Decibel Magazine, maybe you will like this band. It's up to you. Personally, I spent hours making fun of this friend of mine because she was a diehard Coalesce fan. Seriously, hours. It somehow never got old. You can look more into this band on their website.

Fight Like Hell - Demo 2005 For a demo, this thing sure comes with a slick insert. Loving the fonts and images. Real nice touches. Viewing the packaging, I assumed I was going to be listening to some youth crew joints (based on the collegiate fonts) but I was way off. This band has what seems like two singers and plenty of mosh. Add a little shredding and guitar solos and you have Fight Like Hell. ![]() Mosh. 86 Mentality - Going Nowhere Fast - Grave Mistake Records 009 - 2005 If you haven't heard about this band, just climb back under that rock for another 3-4 years. You are missing out on great stuff. This particular release is "Two EP's, 86'ed Tracks & Extra Swill." Pissed off and punk rock. You should probably wear a jean jacket with Crass patches when you see this band. Get into it. ![]() Contact the band or the label for more information. Recess Gone Rong - S/T Demo 2005 Ok, now here's something different that I can hang with. It's a pop punk quartet from somewhere in Pennsylvania (Rong is the correct spelling). I'm guessing a little town with great garages to practice in. It makes me want to put on my Plow United LP. I love Plow United. The band claims some odd influences. From Green Day to "Zepplin" (I'm guessing that is the PA spelling and pronounciation). The band has been around for 3 years and boasts a set list that can cover 2 hours. That seems cool. I wish the CDR they had sent me was more than 4 songs. It'd be nice to hear more from this band. I'm going to suggest you contact these guys to try and get a demo out of them. Look into it. Warpath - Nowhere to Run - Action Man Records 007 - 2005 Here's another one from Action Man Records out of New Zealand. I'm not sure what is in the water down there, but it must be "full of hate." During the intro, the singer dedicates this album to every person who "wakes up with hate in their heart." Yeah, that's not me. The rest of the album jumps from Madball sounds to mosh metal. It's like New Hampshire circa 1997. There must be a time warp somewhere. ![]() Yeah, that is the album cover. I'm all for trying something different with artwork, but c'mon. Is that necessary? Also, check some of these lyrics
C'mon. Is life really that hard in New Zealand? I saw The Lord Of The Rings. It looked nice to me. ;) If you want, you can read more about this band on their website. Yeah.

Damaged - S/T - Action Man Records 2005 Damaged was a monumental album from Black Flag. This was probably Henry Rollins finest performance to date. The vocals were angry, the attitude was punk rock and the cover art was straight menacing. ![]() Damaged from New Zealand is entirely different. They are more mosh metal than punk rock. Lots of growling yells, cymbal crashes, dropped tuning, double kick and slurred vocals. They finish up the album with a Dead Kennedy's cover of Forward To Death. It sounds like a mosh metal band covering a hardcore classic aka a little weird. Cool concept but a little weird, especially the last 15 seconds. You can find more information on the band on their label's site. Something Inside - You will Feel It -- Sunday, February 05, 2006 Back in 2003, I got a demo from Europe. It was from a band called Something Inside. I was a little taken back by what I heard. At the time, I called it a mix of Floorpunch and American Nightmare. This new EP breaks that mold. This EP is still 100% hardcore, but it feels like the band has come more into their own sound. A little maturity in attitude (not in a crappy "now we love Joy Division" sense). I can't say I enjoy all the songs as much as I did the demo. For instance, the song I'm Just Older. I think the message of older guys X'ing up is great, but I can't hang with the screaming divebomb lyrics. Leave that to the guitar player. Bands, please note the following: ![]() Not only did these guys send me color vinyl (clear blue, nice), but they also sent along a TYF rip shirt. Looks pretty good to me. "Senftenberg Straight Edge" meets "Boston Straight Edge." Check out the band for yourself here. |
