Wasted Time - Demo 2005
  -- Wednesday, December 07, 2005

Got this one just a few days after I made a "Best Demo of 2005" poll on the LWR Board. A bunch of dudes replied, WASTED TIME! and I had no idea who they were talking about. I gave this a few spins and appreciate it. But I don't think I could give it a proper review. It's good, just not really my style. Thankfully, Chris Corry offered (more like gave in after some badgering) to lend a hand. Here's his review.

Here’s another one from the Brain Grenade crew in Virginia Beach (hey my home state, fuck yea!) that’s already brought you hits like Iron Boots, Tarpit, and Victim (check out their soon to be released lp WOW!). Wasted Time are probably the most traditional and old sounding of this bunch but they’re not any less powerful, belting out 4 fast ones in the vein of The Abused, Negative Approach, Antidote, and early AF on this demo. For modern references think Dead Stop, 86 Mentality, Shark Attack and so on. The standout track is the opener Shameless which builds up with a pretty sick intro before busting into the real nitty gritty. Tape sleeve is minimal, just your requisite logo, lyrics, and skulls but what the fuck else do you need? You want progressive go buy the new Tortoise album 10 years ago and then call someone who cares. This band already has a 7” recorded and coming out soon on Brain Grenade/Grave Mistake and I’m sure it’s going to rip with the best of them so keep your eyes peeled for these guys.

Thanks CC. Also, if you want to contact Wasted Time, hit em up here.

In My Way - S/T - A389 Records 003 - 2005
  -- Saturday, December 03, 2005

Ok, I got this one from In My Way some time back. It was sitting under a pile of random CDs that I needed to review. When I initially received it from A389 Records, I was struck by some weird similarities. And then, it just got pushed under everything else. Well, today is the day. Time for the review. First off, I'll start with the striking resemblance. You tell me if I'm crazy or not.

Same font, similar lettering effect, 70% similar name, ... Wow. That's not so original. The similarities end there. The cover looks more like a Bear Vs. Shark layout. Or what I imagine a Bear vs. Shark layout (with the bear winning, of course) to look like. Unless you think the logo on the 7" cover looks like In My Eyes X Bold.

Don't worry, though. The music isn't reminiscent of Bold or In My Eyes. Despite the fact that these dudes are down with the straight edge and hail from the home of sxe, Washington DC. Here's what the label has to say about the band:

Washington DC youth crew. Taking you back to the Revelation Records glory days with a rawer edge. Stripped down and simple, these kids bring it with a sound best described as a cross between Project X and an angrier Chain of Strength with some modern day influences.

Yeah, I miss all of those comparisons. Now I know I'm the guy who normally makes real shitty comparisons, but I don't hear anything that even vaguely reminds me of Chain of Strength or PX. But I don't see any positive notions here. It's all neg. If we are going for Rev comparisons, I'd have to side more with an angry Judge (I think the term "angry" is a little unnecessary here) or a pissed Side By Side (again, "pissed" is a little redundant) but without the sheer amazing qualities that make thousands and thousands of kids across the globe love those bands.

So decide for yourself. You can listen to a few of their tracks on their myspace site. Who knows, you could really dig this.

in response to the In My Eyes Logo thing, i thought it looked more like the outbreaklogo. haha. The font is similar, and I never noticed that, which is weird, because I wear that IME shirt all the time. The similarities are purely coencidental, sorry to say.

But thanks for the review. At least it focused somewhat on the music and the songs.

Dude how about not trying to rip apart some of the "little" comparisons you find between this and other records, and give a review of the fucking record. there is no need for you to come off like a douche bag and sit there saying shit like "Same font, similar lettering effect, 70% similar name, ... Wow. That's not so original." Fuckin hardcore now a days insn't fuckin original. Fuck half the bands out there now a days are trying to be mental or outbreak. If you want something original don't listen to hardcore. And so what if it looks like the in my eyes logo. how many bands have ripped off the same boring college varsity font for their band names? a lot i'm sure. Let the music speak for itself. there has been a lot of bands with silly art work our names that have gone on to be really great bands. so sorry if our name or cover art is similar to other bands, name a band that sounds just like us? we're not trying to rip off anyones style or rip off anyone for that matter. we named ourselfs after the Judge song In My Way because i believed in what that song stood for. So anyone reading this give the album a listen and judge for yourself.

Sincerely
Jordo - In My Way

Danny, thanks for staying rational. PS, I never said it was an intentional rip off. I was forced to comment due to the high coincidence rate.

Jordo, please start your own website, have people send you stuff to review and write your own "professional" reviews. As for MY website, with MY reviews, I'm going to continue doing what I do. PS, I later compared you to Judge and Side By Side. "Damn, that is a jerk move on my part. I should apologize."

in my way came and played my city in south carolina and the second they got to the venue they started acting like dicks. the singer was making fun of my friend for being african american dissent and jokes about "the jungle". not cool.

In The Crosshairs - Partners In Crime - Blood Money Records 001 - 2005

Another banger from Blood Money Records. Plus another layout by Juicy Joel. I sense a pattern here ... In The Crosshairs have a strong mosh presence with a hint of get down every now and again. I don't know about the Iron Maiden "for fans of" mention, but I can see the Terror and Madball influences. If you can hang with that, you can likely hang with this. These guys seem to have a lot of spirit, so I can imagine the live show is pretty cool. Plus, they throw in a Striving Higher For a Better Life cover. It was proceeded by a "driving higher for a better life" sample. Eh, I could have done without the sample. The extras on the end are pretty amusing. Cover of the Rolling Stone, an In The Crosshairs take on "Where the Warzone Women at?" ...

Check it out.

Wisdom In Chains - Die Young - Spook City Records 024 - 2005

Most Spook City Records' releases aren't really up my alley. A little too tough crew, a little too hard. Great stuff in that vein, just not my shit. This album is the exception to the rule. It's different from anything I have received from the label before. It's not Buried Alive hard, or Hatebreed mosh. In fact, it reminds me of hard Oi. Yeah, I know. It doesn't make any sense to me either, but that is what I'm hearing. Not pop, but oi. Except hard. Like the if the Dropkick Murphys had grown up on a diet of Blood For Blood, H2O, Sick Of It All and Madball.

Let me wrap it up with this pic from the Wisdom In Chains site. The one thing I immediately noticed was the kid stage diving in Nike Air Safaris. That's all the proof I need.

Lose None - Warrior Blood - Blood Money Records 002 - 2005
  -- Friday, December 02, 2005

Um, what can I say here? This CD isn't really something I would ever pick up. Actually, someone stuffed it into a package I won off of ebay. Not sure if it was the guy from Blood Money Records or someone from Lose None.

Check their site for a couple of tracks and some pics. If you dig hardcore with a heavy, heavy influence (so heavy at times that I can't tell if the vocals are digitally tweaked or not), this may be up your alley. It's not really for me, but hey, more power to these guys. I will say the layout out by Juicy Joel, yes Juicy Joel is pretty original. Haven't seen something like this one before.
