The Starting Point - It's Something You Learn - 2005
  -- Wednesday, November 30, 2005

I almost judged a book by its cover. The name The Starting Point set me off on the wrong foot. Actually, I initially misread it as The Starting Line. That set me off thinking about bands like New Found Glory or American Football. Luckily, this band is more like Ten Yard Fight then Four Minute Mile. Back to the cover, the layout is actually pretty slick. It's in no way a traditional hardcore design, more along the lines of a Jacob Bannon piece. But it's chill and was actually done by Alex Capasso.

No one is ever going to claim this band at posi hardcore, that's for sure. Plenty of songs that mention drowning, falling, draining days, ... But they do make an exemplary use of clapping in a song. The next song takes up a little positive vibe for the album with choruses of "never give in, never give up" -- think Insted. I can hang with a message like that. I could do with a little less "sinking" and more "rising to the top." I'd be fan of that. I'm also a big fan of the guitar parts in the song Action Reaction. I love those jangly like solos in core tunes. It doesn't inspire me to floorpunch or stage dive, but it does make me come back for multiple listens.

If you are in Cali, I suggest you look into these dudes, if you haven't already. And while you are at it, pick up a shirt or two, they could use the financial support. Here's the design.

Zombies in track suits. Yikes.

I keep playing It's Something You Learn over and over and have yet to get tired of it. It did take a few plays before I really got into it. It's a great combination of some hardcore but with melody. Good for driving home from work.

Make Or Break - Think About It! - Get Outta Town Records 001- 2005
  -- Tuesday, November 15, 2005

You may or may not remember my shining review of the demo CDR I received. That's fine. What you should know is that this LP also receives a shining review. It's a great album from Florida. Most of you probably don't know too much about the panhandle, but let me tell you, this LP makes is the reason why people will care if Florida falls into the ocean (much like many hope California does). I suppose Ray, Luis and Toby are also other reasons for wanting Florida to remain above water. Make Or Break can likely swim, but just in case. I ... WON'T GO DOWN! When you fucking drown from "Friendships Gone."

This CD is the 5 demo tracks, plus 5 new songs and a Sick Of It All cover. The first run through, when listening to the cover, I thought to myself, "wow, these dudes are ripping HARD on a song. Now, what is that song?" It then occurred to me that it was a cover. They give it their own twist. And in the insert, you see someone wearing a SOIA basketball jersey. I didn't think anyone really bought or wore those (Back in 1998, I owned a Turmoil soccer jersey. I wore it a few times, and then fortunately/unfortunately, I spilled something on it that wouldn't come out. If you look around Worcester, you may find some ghetto rat wearing it.).

Also, someone please convince these dudes to reproduce these shirts. I'd suggest white shirts with black ink. But that's just me.

You can order the LP through Get Outta Town Records. Word. Get into it.

Thanks so much for the review, especially a positive one. Very much appreciated. We are going to try and reprint some of the shirts we had for our first tour, that being one of them. the original colors were blue ink on black shirt, but we are going to screen it with some new colors. I will let you know when that happens. Thanks again man!

GLW/DRK - Glow In The Dark Magazine Issue 2

Wow, today was my lucky day. Lately, the magazine scene has been real lame. Nothing interesting has come across the book sellers in a while. Sure, Sole Collector was great, but that was a summer issue. Vapors Magazine and Mass Appeal have been good lately, but I wouldn't say they were outstanding. Actually the D*Face issue of Vapors was pretty dope, I have to give that one props.

Anyway, today I arrived at home to find this gem, GLW/DRK in my mailbox. I vaguely recall talking to a dude in Europe about a "zine" he did and how he wanted to send me a free ish. What he failed to mention was that his "zine" was full color, great paper stock, and that it was pushing 100 pages. In fact, this is as far from the typical zine as one can go. The content is pretty fresh, too. Interviews with skateboard pros, hot up and coming bands, bands that just departed the scene (but had a huge footprint), ... This zine has some stellar interviews with legends, Guy Picciotto and Tom Knox. Throw in an article about DIY lingerie (La Fille D'O), and I'm sold.

I seriously suggest you check this magazine out. Shouldn't be too hard for your Wien, Austria natives. Plenty of other European countries have the hook up too. Click on this link for the full list of retailers. Also, if you are on myspace, you can check out their page there.

The Fire Still Burns - Keeping Hope Alive - Blackout Records 081 - 2005

I recall seeing The Fire Still Burns play with Bold at their first reunion show circa early 2005. At the time, I was surely perplexed how this unknown band (at least to me) got on such a killer show. After watching their set and seeing the 6 kids who were really into it, I basically wrote off the band. The music didn't grab me; I didn't feel the need to hear more.

Fast forward 6 months or so. I get a CDep in the mail. Straight from Invisible Youth PR. I had received the follow up to their demo. 6 fresh tracks recorded at the Big Blue Meenie studios. It's hard to mess up that track record.

I popped in the cd and was really impressed with the first track. The second track too. It was like taking Good Riddance, adding Lifetime, and heaping on a ton of rock n roll soul. Imagine if The Enkindels (not Enkindel, but rather The Enkindels) hadn't broken up and released an EP in 2005. This is probably what it would have sounded like. My only beef is that the third through sixth song sound like rehashes of the first two songs. I understand that is how punk rock goes, but if I'm listening to something with pop, it better have hooks. I don't think I can honestly tell the difference between the tracks, even after a few listens.

Regardless, the next time I get the chance to see this outfit, I'll be paying more attention. I may not be the guy in the front row singing along SUPER loudly, but I'll be paying attention.
