Blank Stare - S/T - 2005 -- Tuesday, September 27, 2005 Wow, political hardcore. Welcome back. We've missed you. Lots of talk about killing pimps for selling "my sisters back to me," unionizing prostitutes (I believe I'm reading this right), and an anti drug message, "Fuck coke, fuck smoke, fuck choking on fumes ... Fuck hurt, fuck lines, fuck chew, fuck booze, fuck drugs. Fuck you." A little crusty, a little grindy, all core. Good shit. You can contact these dudes here. Ambush - S/T - Sent To Destroy Records #002 - 2005 This 7" came to me from a shirt trade. It happened I was trading with the dude from Sent To Destroy Records. It looks like they used to have a website, but it appears to be down. At least they still have this cool logo. ![]() Back to Ambush. This record is nearly impossible to listen to. It sounds awesome, it really does. But the bass is mixed WAY TOO FUCKING HIGH. It's like that Honda Civic that loves to tool down my street. The trunk rattles, and the ground shakes. Listening to this 7" made my jaw hurt. Ouch. Haha, I take all that back. It looks like the wife accidentally turned up the subwoofer a stupid amount. Haha, yeah, I suck at reviews. Ok, back to the music again. The intro is rad. Along an Integrity tip. The rest of the songs speed it up but keep a heavy vibe. Less grind, more grinding. Please note, these dudes give a shout out to "Cornelius the Alien." The next time you are in Michigan, check these dudes out. Stop, Look , Listen - Demo '05 -- Friday, September 23, 2005 I got this demo some time ago. I put it in my cd player, and it just wouldn't work. Then today, I'm talking to a dude about a Cold World shirt trade. He tells me he forgets to put his friend's demo in the package. Turns out, that band is Stop, Look, Listen. Upon further inspection, it also turns out that the cd-r is working today. Why today and not then? No freaking clue. Apparently they are recording new tracks this week for an upcoming 7". That seems cool to me. Seems like a weird turn of coincidences. Regardless, here's the review. More songs should have great intros. Such is the case with the fourth track on this demo (my version is just a cd-r with no insert. Sorry, I won't be able to over critique demo layouts, or discuss lyrical content). Actually, each song seems to have a great little intro and top notch gang vocals. They don't over do it. It seems to be just right, like the baby bear's porridge. As for a sound, imagine Youth Of Today playing Fastbreak 7" tracks. Get into this band and demo. Don't sleep. They already have 807 MySpace friends. Maybe you could be 808.
At Risk - S/T - Bloody Knuckles 03 - 2005 -- Sunday, September 18, 2005 I have honestly never heard of this band. Maybe I have been living under a rock. This could be. Any band that can get additional vocals by Russ Rankin (of Good Riddance, Only Crime, ...) must be legit. After listening to this album, I know they are legit. No particular song stands out to me as head and shoulders above the rest. That's mostly because every song is super solid. Great production, lots of energy, a mature, fast and hard sound. No Crippled Youth here. Just fast paced with an angry vibe hardcore. A mix of posi and "you did this to me/us" lyrics. This is the third release by Bloody Knuckles Records. Nice to see they do more than just dope skateboards. Hell, they even provided me with a business card (and a good heads up hand-written letter too). Definitely worth supporting. You can find At Risk on the nerd.
Make Or Break - Demo 05 -- Friday, September 16, 2005 This demo came courtesy of Youth Attack. They must have picked it up when they were down in sunny Florida on tour. That's cool because this demo rips. I can't argue with anything the singer says in "Down For Life." A good message over great music. Sounds right to me. You can tell these dudes are pretty chill. Hell, even Matt Warnke did back up vocals which were recorded by J Jonah Jameson. Those dudes are legit. haha. Check out Make Or Break on the nerd.
Youth Attack - Don't Look Back - Think Fast! Records 015 - 2005 Once upon a time, there was this band that Owen Black would not quit talking about. He was hyping the hell out of these dudes. It bordered on ridiculous. He was super amped because they were real young, loved the edge and were down for the core. I ended up seeing them for the first time at WPI back in October of 2004 (This was the same show where Greg made a long winded speech about how stupid eating meat is. Good shit). Damn, the singer looked like he was 12, but he was giving 100%. Really, he was probably giving 110%. After that, HYE? proudly hosted their website. The band grew, they continued to tour and gradually, more and more kids started to get into them. Fast forward to now. Youth Attack pulled their site from HYE (as no one ever updated it. Probably my fault too.). I hadn't heard much about the band, except some negative shit about edge breaking and the lot. I didn't put much stake in any of that. Then the other day, voila, I get a package from Worcester. I don't know anyone in Worcester anymore, so I was psyched. Turns out, it is the new Youth Attack cd and a shirt. Fuck yeah. They had one left over from tour and wanted to thank me (Bands, take note. This is a great way to get a good review. ;)). The CD is bold. Long gone are the days of Jeff drawing penises on his body. The youthful silliness is out, and the rocking punk is in. Short songs blast one after another with great drum fills and tight breakdowns. This band means business and business is good. It's also nice to see that Jeff puts the edge break rumors to sleep with "Never Forget." As a bonus for the CD, they even throw on a Operation Ivy cover. Sounds good. You have to like that. Check this album out if you haven't yet. You can find them over on Think Fast! Records or Youth Attack @ Myspace.
