The Art Of Reprinting Shirts

A few days back while hanging with Bane, I noticed they were selling some shirts that had already previously been printed. Then I got to thinking about how I had some shirts at home that struck me as odd when I got them. They were definitely different than the originals I had purchased, but without closely investigating, I could not put my finger on it. That's what I did yesterday. I spent a while taking pictures of shirts, and will point out differences. You'll notice all the shirts are Bane, but this could apply to any band.

Opinion #1: original printings are always more inspired than reprints. Obviously.

Opinion #2: Reprints always have an "off" feeling to them. I'm not sure what it is, but something always feels odd.

Not the reprint uses a less yellow/more orange ink, has less sparkle in the gold print and appears slightly muddy.

I call this the Iron Eagle tee. I'm sure someone else has a different name for it. Who knows. Anyway, you can see the differences. They are very subtle, but they exist. First off, the shirts are completely different brands and qualities. The original is on an American Apparel tee, while the reprint is on a Hanes tee. Nothing new or terrible about that. I'm sure it happens all the time. Printers probably use whatever tees they have available in the specified color given. I'm can't imagine there is a big push for "baby puke green" american apparel tees.

As for the screens, the prints are just slightly different. It could be the amount of ink used per shirt, or they could be different screens. I'm not 100%. But if you view the reprint, you'll notice more well defined black areas. And it appears "less vintage," less pitted and spotted. Again, this could be the ink amount, but I feel it loses a little of that original appeal.

The crowded rooms tee is the most noticeable and obvious reprint situation. Actually, the reprint shirts came from the Australian tour. I suppose it was probably cheaper to have some shirts printed in Australia then to lug them 2000 plus miles and pay all the fees associated with brining in merch.

However, the reprint does the tee an injustice, I think. While the inks used on the front are bright and vibrant, they seem to detract from the gritty "give blood" splatter logo vision. The ink is also much thicker on the front giving it more of a Nickelodeon "Double Dare" feel then a hardcore tee.

The back side is the major injustice. The image has been shrunk to the point where everyone pictured appears to be a smurfy blur. I'm not saying the original image was crisp and brilliant, but the sense of what was going on is visible in the original image. The reprint -- not so much.

There you have it. I'm sure I missed a few subtleties that a reader or two will notice. Feel free to clue me in. And in conclusion, for bands: just make new designs. Kids love fresh new shirts. I know sometimes it is hard to make a new design during the middle of tour, but that's why you have friends back home or anywhere on the globe. Get them to whip something up, don't dig into the back catalog unless the design is classic.

Big Day On Ebay ...

Normally I would leave this kind of post up to bidhardcore.com but this one really struck me as awesome.

First up is the test press for the In My Eyes Nothing To Hide LP. I believe Scott P once offered to off someone for one of these. It's pretty amazing, but that BIN is mind boggling.

Next up is 5 different Uniform Choice LPs. All Screaming For Change, but all different color variations. Getting Wishingwell LPs on color vinyl is pretty damn hard (unless you are talking about the insted lp, that seems to always be around in white vinyl). In this auction, you get 5 different ones. All the real color pressings and a few variation colors. Dope. You should also note that he says " i have atleast 30 uc colors in my collection, and somewhat 3 complete sets of these colors..." Good lord!

Sadly, the owner is selling them to buy a Nirvana EP. I think it is safe to assume that he is high. Those BIN prices pretty much back up my claim (even if the BIN on the UC was $2.5k last night, and is now reduced to $2.2k. Yikes).

Set your Tivo, but don't tell your mom. Get ready for another "documentary" that attempts to portray SXE. Of course, unless you are knifing people, don't expect to get a lot of shout outs in this show. From what I've heard, they mostly focus on the radical minority. I guess that makes sense. It helps sell ad time, right? You wouldn't buy a People magazine that featured a hollywood starlet who was living a normal, young adult life without drama, would you? Probably not. But I'm sure, people would snatch up every copy that featured coked out Lindsay Lohan. It's just how people work. Like watching train wrecks ...

One thing to note about this poster: plenty of New England love. Johnny Limit, Jeff Youth Attack, Dan Gonyea. I don't know the others. I'm sure they are lovely people though.

Consider that the truth. It holds in basically all aspects of life, including hardcore shirt sales on ebay. This week, we'll be reviewing how shirt size, design and current popularity affect final auction prices.

Lets start if off with American Nightmare. Now American Nightmare is HUGE. No doubt. They've always been big. Even when they just had a demo out (fuck, such an amazing demo). Things go in cycles, check this auction that ended this morning (while I was in a meeting, double fuck).

American Nightmare - Flag. Size L

This shirt dates WAY back. Probably 2000 or 2001. That's 7 years ago for those who aren't counting. And somehow, SOMEHOW, this dope shirt ended for $5.50. That's right, $5.50. That's the same price as a Triple Venti Soy Latte at Starbucks. You can see the ridiculousness now. However, it's a size large, and we all know that kids love schmediums or YLs these days. Plus, the image doesn't scream Fall Out Boy / Emo Fan. It probably wouldn't go well with a white belt either.

Then there is this shirt. I recall this one sitting on the merch table for a bit. Cool drawing, I suppose. Super emo. And a size small. Yeap, $26 final price. And of course, I believe this value is down from previous months when this shirt was selling for $40+. Is the American Nightmare hype over?

Moving on, lets check Cold World.

Cold World - 1917 Pre-Order. Size YL

So here we have an unworn Youth Large. But the color is semi-dreaded white. That should be ok, a lot of Cold World shirts are printed on white blanks (more bands should print on white blanks. Eff a black shirt. I'm not emo, I don't need anymore black shirts). And those other shirts sell reasonably well. But for some reason, this shirt came in at a paltry $5. Yeap, cheaper than that fancy latte. And I bought one a month back for $2.25. What's going on here? This shirt is chill.

Cold World - BAPE. Size S

White shirt, size small and worn. You're probably thinking, ok, this one should clock in pretty low at final auction price. Not so. This one hit $26. Most likely due to the Bathing Ape reference. Of course, this shirt was on MerchNOW for what seemed like years. And yes, someone did cut the tags out of the shirt. SMH.

Ok, so maybe kids are finicky over newer bands. What about a perennial favorite like Ten Yard Fight?

Ten Yard Fight - Back On Track Tour 97. Size XL

This shirt has obviously been around the block. Hell it's over 10 years old and probably has seen a pit or two. It is a size XL but kids aren't afraid of tailoring so you'd think it'd be a hot and heavy seller. Nope. The $1.25 minimum bid wasn't even made. Not one bidder! Sacrilege.

Ten Yard Fight - Blood Will Run Pure. Size M

So the last shirt had no bidders. This shirt appears to be in the same condition and is definitely from the same age, but shockingly, this one sold for $20.50. I guess, kids are still afraid of tailoring, or just wearing clothes that don't show off their man nips.

We'll finish it off with Mental. Mental shirts are always ill in my opinion. Greg Mental, Jay Bil and even MorGODo (just kidding Morgado) produced some ill shirts over the years.

Mental - Planet Mental - Posi #s '05. Size M

Now this was a pretty dope little design. Take the album cover, play with placement and BAM, chill shirt. I think Greg and Co did a bunch of different colourways for this shirt (grey/blue, black/blue, black/white, ...). This one is definitely chill. But somehow, it only sold for $1.34. You can't even buy a blank t-shirt for that little. That's just stupid.

Mental - Knife Fight Tour. Size S

Here's a cool MorGODo drawing, chill colors and size small. I would estimate this one would sell for over $20. At the very least. Was I right? No. Was I close? Not really. This one clocked in at $4.29, which is the price of a Venti Soy Latte (two shots of espresso, instead of 3). That pretty much hurts my feelings.

So what can I conclude from this array of ebay end auctions? Honestly? Not a hell of a lot. Except that kids are picky petes and wouldn't know a good tshirt if it punched them in the face. I suppose that works in my favor though. Instead of fighting kids for Fastbreak tees, I can just sit back and let them come to me for pennies on the dollar. The real losers here are the sellers and the kids who don't properly appreciate Fastbreak and their merch (shout outs to AJT).

Aram from React Records was in town for the Verse 5th anniversary show. Along the way, he hooked me up with this white hoodie. Nothing says "youth crew hardcore" like a white hooded sweatshirt. Amazing.

Now, we should convince Aram to make crewneck sweatshirts. Lets get that done! Keep checking React Records, he should have the Breakthrough EP up soon. You know that's going to be ill.

I just whipped up a cool little feature for the shirt database. You'll now see an ebay link at the top of the page. When you click on this link, you will be forwarded to an ebay search site of the current band.

Suppose you are looking at all the Floorpunch shirts. Clicking the ebay logo at the top of the page will shoot you over to an immediate search for Floorpunch gear on ebay. Check out the results here. Now, go dig through those shirt pics and see if you have any luck with ebay.

I got an email earlier from Offsides (CT's finest). Seems they are leaving on an east coast tour come January. I suggest you all mark these dates in your calendar IN PEN. Whatever is fine by me.

Connecticut's OFFSIDES offer female-fronted hardcore in the vein of 7 SECONDS or FLOORPUNCH (and perhaps FAST TIMES). The group recently released a split with RIPSHIT on Spicy Soup Productions - you can check out a couple of songs from the release, and some demo tunes on their MySpace page. This Week in Hardcore - Ebay - Mr. Bane Edition

This week I am focusing on Bane gear. Why? Because I like Bane. Duh. But there is more to it than that. I've started to notice a trend that I think says a lot about Bane fans/collectors. I'll conclude with that assessment.

To me, those prices aren't all over the board. They aren't random. Here's how I figure. Bane fans love Bane for their music. They are your average kid. They aren't Mr. Hardcore Shirt Collector. If they were that guy, the first shirt would have sold for WAY more than $9.50 (smoking gun design with black lettering). It's limited to a few dozen. And the West Coast 99 tour shirt that is limited to 2 dozen would also have fetched more loot.

The Mr Sparkles shirt price can be attributed more to the logo than the limited supply. Most Bane fans wouldn't realize that shirt was only sold at a few shows, including an early Hellfest. They have no idea that ONE yellow one even exists (I still need that picture Mr. R). I believe the same can be said for the jacket. The limited nature isn't what drove the price up. It was driven up by the cool samurai pocket print. That's my guess.

And the designs with no bids, well, sometimes designs just don't work on the consumer. In this case, Bane fans passed. Of course, I slept and forgot to bid so if you are holding one of those shirts, hook me up.

Bane fans love Bane. They want to rock a zip hoodie. It hardly matters what color it is. These fans are not your obsessive shirt collector. They aren't WishingWell fanatics or individuals who care about bootlegs vs. OG prints. I know a few exceptions exist, but as far as stereotyping goes, I think I hit it square on.

A Few Updates From The HYE? Team ...

Just a few things.

1. I updated my method for adding shirts to the Shirt Archive. Now when you send shirts to me, it won't take years to up them. That's a good thing.

2. I added some sweet collection pics from Orhun. Check it.

3. I've heard some complaints lately about the submission process on the Trade Board. Believe me, I do this with all of you in mind. Case in point (name hidden to protect the young, innocent hardcore kid):

This list didn't cut the mustard and wasn't added. If there was no submission process, this one would have slipped through. Every time a list is added, the search feature gets slower and slower. Be glad you have me here to separate the wheat from the chaff.

We've decided that all those emails about sweet pictures from awesome shows for our website have become a bit cumbersome. Most of those pictures ARE awesome. Most of the shows look insane. But it was just a lot of goddamn work to put those things up.

We decided that it's much easier if you think your pictures are great-we want to cut out the middle man.

If you have pictures of B9 bands you want to see on the site-you can now submit them. There's a spot for your photo credit, the show, the venue and the band. If you go to the main page, the right side has a camera and a pop up screen. We want to see them and we want to give you the credit so people know your pictures rule.

Agnostic Front For My Family EP & Murphy's law

Wednesday we received our long awaited Agnostic Front "For My family" 7" EP. They looked awesome. They featured 3 new songs from one of New York's hardcore legends and proved they're still at the top of their game. However, after we went home to check out this vinyl and the songs, we found a horrible mistake.

The pressing plant we frequently use "guarantees" every project is correct screwed up. The A-Side of the record features "For My Family" and "Dead To Me" which are two awesome songs from their Nuclear Blast record "Warriors" which is in stores November 6th. The B-Side exclusive-the one song exclusive to this EP-"Break The Chains" is not there. It is the song "Dead To Me" for the second time. Obviously, this is a huge mistake if you ask us. A HUGE mistake. We're scratching our heads on this one as the master went straight from Alan Douches and West West Side to our hands to the pressing plant-and they are so professional they even put a two minute space of nothing so the plant knew where the break was supposed to be. But that doesn't matter-so we have to make the situation correct.

350 copies made their way out in the first batch of orders through Revelation & our first batch of mailorders. Those customers are welcome to contact orders@bridge9.com and to return their vinyl and get the correct version seeing as "Break The Chains" is a killer song and we understand. When you return the vinyl, let us know and we'll send you a CD OF YOUR CHOICE to make up for the mistake. If you want to keep your error pressing, you already have your record en route or in your hands so do nothing and enjoy the two songs from "Warriors". There are a few copies that made their way out to stores like Generation & Newbury but the rest are going to be replaced with the correct vinyl and shipped at the beginning of the week of October 8th. The 2000+ copies will be pulled and destroyed or recycled or turned into a new wall at our office.

This is a thank you to those who ordered, and an explanation or apology to those who have a 10 day delay. We're still taking orders as they'll ship out early next week. For those who think they're getting a rare version somewhere in stores-both "Break The Chains" and "Dead To Me" are about 2:50 of music, so unless you're putting it on a turntable- it's going to be impossible to tell if you have a regular copy or a botched copy. First to Leave have announced several tour dates in support of their October 9th release, "Forging a Future." The band will embark on a west coast tour with long-time friends Fireworks. Following these dates, the band will head to Japan for a series of performances with Lifetime. For those of you on the east coast, don't sweat it, more tour plans are in the works. Ambitions "Stranger" was a victim of internet leakage. We are PSYCHED that people want to hear this record so urgently. We are NOT psyched that we didn't even have CDs yet, so we really want to know who's capable of some Judas type betrayal right there somewhere close. Someday we'll post a blog about being told "I can't delete that link, people expecting the CD will be angry with me," but not today. Either way, what's done is done, but rather than cry, stamp feet or set up a press release condemning the working man for stealing our money (Ambitions are buddies with members of that reference, so it's all in good fun), we decided to set up pre-orders for Ambitions stranger right now. To thank the people who order from us, we have an AIM account set up where you send us your order number & last name-and we send you a link to the Mp3s we hid somewhere on the internet. Death Before Dishonor just doesn't stop touring. They're starting a tour with Damnation AD & Unholy TOMORROW (click the flyer for dates) and they're home for a week before heading out with their new labelmates AGNOSTIC FRONT for two weeks of domestic shows. THEN they're home for two weeks and off to Europe for the Persistence Tour with Hatebreed, AF, Ignite, Evergreen Terrace and Sworn Enemy. Solid show right there.

Then they'll probably keep touring after that, as soon as they're ready for us to announce those plans, we will.

I got a package from Triple B Records recently. It's was packed full of goodies. The new album from Overdose (check a review coming soon), the Haunted Life / Make or Break split on white/clear spiral splatter vinyl (you can guess what it is supposed to look like), a dope shirt, HELL YEAH and a mouse pad. Yes, a Triple B Records mouse pad. "A mouse pad ... a mouse pad. I don't even own a mouse, let alone many mice that would necessitate an entire pad. What am I gonna do... with a mouse pad?"

It's been 13 lucky years since COALESCE first entered a studio, and still no one's topped the Kansas City, Missouri quartet's paradigm-flipping noise/metal/hardcore mash-up. Well, put down your tablature and start sweating, Junior, because the boys are back in town, and they're tweaking this genre harder in two new songs than their trail of admirers has done in, like, forever. Salt and Passage, out September 11th, 2007 on Second Nature Recordings (in conjuction with the band's imprint Crash and Bang, is COALESCE's first release of new material since 1999's Revolution in Just Listening (Relapse), was recorded by longtime producer/friend Ed Rose and features the now-legendary lineup of Sean Ingram (vocals), Jes Steineger (guitar), The Casket Lottery's Nathan Ellis (bass) and Nathan "Junior" Richardson (drums). Here's a sweet, little gem. The Bold reels from the Speak Out recordings. It even has an extra track. I know the track was released on the latest Bold discography, but I'm pretty positive that track was mixed off a cassette recording. Definitely not from the original recording.
